VDI to Ease Travel, Secure Data, and Save Cost for Customers
Written on November 30, 2011 by in People, Virtualization

Let’s talk Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).  I used to think VDI’s implementation scenarios would be very limited but some personal experiences over the last year have really broadened my view. Being a consultant, the topic of VDI has recently become near and dear to my heart as I travel quite a bit and am often required to use not only my EMC company laptop but also to be on the clients’ system as well.  This presents many challenges, such as traveling with additional electronics that add extra weight, which in turn provides additional challenges at the airport, etc.  I strive for technologies that make my life easier and enhance my productivity, so this is of great importance to me.  Being able to travel with a lesser number of devices by utilizing VDI for the client is huge!  Below is a breakdown of the problems I see VDI solving and why it’s not only a win for the traveling consultant, but for the customer as well.

1. Reduce hardware cost – Customer no longer has to deploy a laptop for each new contractor or consultant

2. Secure data – Many of the clients we have are concerned about their data, and rightly so. So why not have it all secured in their data center instead of on PC’s or Laptop’s deployed to their contractors?

3. Consultant/Contractor Turn Over – Many companies have contractors and consultants that are in and out of their company frequently. This means higher costs of deployment of company PC’s for them to do their work. Issuing them a Virtual Desktop cuts down time for the contractor to get their new machine and be productive. It also saves the company that’s issuing it both time and money.

4. Consultants Traveling with Multiple PC’s – As a consultant on the road most of the time, this is near and dear to my heart. While on the road, it is very frustrating to have to travel with multiple PC’s. If I could travel with one device and be able to use a Virtual Desktop for my client, I can’t even begin to explain how much more streamlined and easier it would make things.

The more I think about the possibilities, the more I get excited.  The cost savings, convenience, and security that VDI can bring are a big win for all.
